Nav and Transport Flashcards
Things to do before you take an Uber/Lyft
Look for hop-on/hop-off bus tours before taking Uber/Lyft (especially over large distances)
Rule of thumb when looking at travel times
Driving and walking always takes TWICE as long as it says it will on Google maps
Using devices for navigation
Phones sometimes have unreliable GPS signals. It’s best to have more than one device (or person) so that at least one of them can be used reliably with Uber/Lyft/Google maps
Shoe types for city walking
Wear comfortable shoes if you’re going to be walking around in a city
Rules for driving
- Make sure you call ahead and ask where to park, that way you’re not having to find a spot when you get there
- Some cities are more drivable than others. You won’t really know how comfortable you’ll be driving in that city until you get there.
-Try bringing a bicycle so you can move around faster, won’t have to worry about parking, won’t be tempted by food vendors - It is often better to rent a car rather than put mileage on your own vehicle
- If you’re the one driving from one location to the next, you need to practice that route, even if it’s a city you’re familiar with. Unless that exact route is something that you’ve done very recently or very frequently, there’s a very good chance you’re going to mess it up
- If you are driving from your home to your vacation spot, make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes. Basically you will be digging your right heel into the footwell for hours.
How to lookup how big the plane is/how cramped the seats are before you book the flight
Conditions under which taking an Uber is best, even if you have a car available
If you have a car with you, but you know parking is going to be insane at your event, just take an Uber… It’s worth the money to skip the stress/frustration (not to mention the likelihood that you will find yourself in urgent need of a bathroom while searching for a spot or waiting in line for parking)
Importance of early boarding for flights
Without it, the overhead carry-on compartment could fill up before you get there
Where to sit on an airplane
Seats closest to the nose of the plane offer the lowest stress (won’t have to start and stop every few seconds on your way to your seat)
How not to get screwed over by delayed flights
- No short layovers (either long layovers or no layovers at all)
- Do NOT pre-order an Uber to pick you up directly from the airport
Importance of avoiding busy travel days
Unpopular travel days (like Tuesdays) aren’t just cheaper… they’re faster. You won’t have to wait in lines to check in for the flight or for the TSA check. Minimizes risk of missing the flight (because things happen and you might arrive at the airport late)
Minimizing your time in TSA check
- Either keep what you are carrying in your pockets in a minimum for the TSA check, OR get a small bag to hold those things. Otherwise you will end up holding up the TSA line while you awkwardly unload and re-load your pockets.
