Can prochlorperazine be given IV?
No
What can you administer for undifferentiated nausea and vomiting?
- Ondansetron 4mg ODT
- -Rpt 4mg after 5-10mins if sx persist (max 8mg ODT, IV or in combination)
- If the patient is unable ti tolerate ODT or IV is in situ - 8mg IV
- If known allergy or C/I to ordains + pt >21 yrs = Prochlorperazine 12.5mg IM
If the patient is dehydrated from vomiting how can you treat them?
Less than adequate perfusion
- Consider NaCl IV (Max 40ml/kg) titrated to patient response. Consult for further fluid. If consult unavailable repeat NaCl 20ml/kg (total 60ml/kg)
Adequate perfusion but significant dehydration:
- Consider NaCl 20ml/kg IV over 30/60
How can you treat vestibular nausea?
If patient >21 years
- Prochlorperazine 12.5mg IM
If pt <21 years ondansetron as per nausea and vomiting
When would you treat for vestibular nausea?
- Potential for motion sickness
- Planned aeromedical evacuation
- Vertigo
When can you treat a patient prophylactically for nausea and vomiting?
- Pts with potential spinal injuries and who are immobilised
- eye trauma (penetrating eye injury)
How can you treat someone prophylactically for nausea and vomiting?
- Ondansetron as per nausea and vomiting
- If known allergy or C/I ondansetron and > 21 yrs, Prochlorperazine 12.5mg
