Nature Vs Nurture Flashcards
What is the nature vs nurture argument
It is the question of whether a persons development is due to their genes or their environmental influences
What does the Nature side argue
They argue that behavior is a product of innate and predetermined factors such as genes, biology and heredity
What are Nativist and what do they argue
( example of a nativist)
Descartes is a nativist that believed the mind posses innate ideals at birth and this innate knowledge is transmitted through heredity
What is an example of a Nature argument
Bowlbys monotropic theory
- believed that babies are born with an innate need to form to build an attachment to their primary caregiver which is the mother
What does the Nurture side argue
They argue that behavior is a product of nurture and the environment influence
Environment
1. Pre natal- before birth (like the mothers physical stage during pregnancy)
2. Post natal- after birth (like the social conditions a child grows in)
What are Empiricist and what do they argue
( examples of an empiricist)
Locke is an empiricist that argues knowledge comes from experiences and observations, he sees the mind as tabula as a which is a blank state that is shaped by experience
What is an example of a Nurture argument
Behaviorist on Phobias
- they believe that phobias are required through association learning , so traumatic experiment turns a neutral stimulus into a fear
What is the relative importance of heredity and environment (give examples)
It is the argument about the extent to which behaviors are due to to the influence of wether nature or nurture
- Behaviorists include biology in their theories
—> primary reinforcement such as food and sex is innate and biological
So the dogs drooling in response to food isn’t a learnt behavior
However, they do also believe that animals and humans learn through association and consequences of their actions
- Biological psychologist include learning in theory
—> biological psychologists recognize that there is an interaction between biological processes and environmental factors
So early trauma and deprivation can affect brain development
What does the interactionist approach argue
They argue that genes and the environment interact and influence each other
What is the diatheses stress model and how does this an example of the interactionist approach
It is an explanation for conditions such as OCD and Schizophrenia
- individuals may inherit a genetic predisposition for a mental health conditions but the development of the disorders does not happen unless it is triggered by the environmental stressor
—> this supports it as it shows both factors, genetics and environmental factors both have a role in the development for the development of disorders
