Gender Bias Flashcards
What is Universality
Theories that can apply to everyone equally regarding of gender and culture
What is Gender Bias
it is a distorted view that does not accurately represent the experiences and behaviors of men and women
What is Alpa Bias
This is when differences of the genders are over exaggerated
What is Beta Bias
This is when differences of the genders are either ignored or underestimated
What is Androcentrism
This is the domination of men and everything being centered around men
What is an example of alpha bias
An example of Alpha Bias is the Socialbiological theory of relationship formation
- Men impregnate as many women as possible to keep their legacy going
- Women are more careful with who they choose to garuntee their offspring survival
This however makes it seem like all men just want to impregnate as many women as possible
What is an example of beta bias
An exanole of Beta Bias is the early research on Flight or Fight
- it was explained that both would run away from danger, however women are more likely to befriend the person while men would either run of fight
How can gender bias be minimized
By developing theories that emphasise the importance of women
- Cornwell did research on women and found that they are better at learning
Evaluation- What is a consequence of beta bias
A consequence of beta bias is the equal parent leave
- it ignores the biological demands of pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding on the woman
Evaluation- What do Feminist Psychologists argue
They believe that woman should be studied in a meaningful way within a real life setting, they shouldn’t just be the object of the study but part of the study, this is possible through qualitative data
Evaluation- What is Reflexivity
Reflexivity is the researchers ability to embrace their bias and use it in their research processes, this is an important development for psychology
