6
Q

How is coal and peat formed?

A

It was formed from trees and plants falling into the swamps millions of years ago. The vegetation decayed due to lack of oxygen and was put under immense pressure from the layers covering it. Initially peat is formed but if the peat is put under huge pressure it will turn into coal.

7
Q

How is crude oil and natural gas formed?

A

When plants and animals died millions of years ago, they fell to the bottom of the ocean where they were gradually buried under other plants and animals. Over the years layers of rocks crushed them, helping them decay without oxygen. Most of the oil and gas was trapped underneath the rocks.

Q

What is Fractional Distillation?

A

Fractional Distillation is a method used to separate crude oil compounds. The compounds are collected over a boiling range for example 60-120°C, and are known as fractions. The process starts by heating the crude oil to produce gases, the gases rise up the column with the fractions with higher boiling points condense at the bottom and those with lower boiling points higher up.

16
Q

What is a combustion reaction?

A

Hydrocarbons burning to produce carbon dioxide and water

17
Q

Why is lime water used to test for carbon dioxide?

A

Because carbon dioxide turns lime water milky

18
Q

What is the word equation for a combustion reaction?

A

Fuel + O2 → CO2 + H2O

19
Q

What are two methods for testing for water?

A

Water is the only liquid that freezes at 0oC and boils at 100oC. It also turn cobalt chloride paper from blue or pink.

20
Q

What can biomass be used as an alternative for?

A

Fossil Fuels

21
Q

Name three examples of biomass?

A

Wood, Crops and Seaweed

22
Q

What is Ethanol and example of and how can it be produced?

A

Ethanol is an example of a biofuel and can be produced using the process of fermentation

23
Q

What is released when bioethanol is burned as a fuel?

A

Carbon Dioxide

24
Q

Why are biofuels considered carbon neutral?

A

They are considered carbon neutral because the carbon dioxide produced when burning is removed by the atmosphere when the biofuel is growing.

25
Q

Describe the process of fermentation

A

A metabolic process in which an organism converts a carbohydrate into an alcohol or acid.

26
Q

What is the word equation for the conversion of glucose into alcohol?

A

C6H12O6 → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO.
