Nature of nursing-Ch2: Evidence- Based Practice & Research In Nursing Flashcards
This research entails the systematic collection, statistical analysis, and interpretation of numerical data.
Quantitative research
This research is the systematic collection and thematic analysis of narrative data; this research collects and analyzes words rather than numbers.
Qualitative research
Process in which decisions are made that result in a detailed plan or proposal for a study, as well as the actual implementation of the plan.
Research process
Clinical decision making based on the simultaneous use of the best evidence, clinical expertise, and clients’ values.
- assess the need for a change in practice: identify source that indicates change is needed
- locate the best evidence: gather evidence
- critically analyze the evidence: determine if risks outweigh potential benefits
- design practice change: resources, methods used
- implement and evaluate the change: small test
- integrate and maintain change in practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP)
Any information a subject relates will not be made public or available to others without the subjects consent
Confidentiality
The behavior, characteristic, or outcome that the researcher wishes to explain or predict
Dependent variable
Procedures that summarize large volumes of data; used to describe and synthesize data, showing patterns and trends
Descriptive statistics
Research that provides a framework to focus on the culture of a group of people
Ethnography
Research to understand social structures and social processes; this method focuses on the generation of categories or hypotheses that explains patterns of behavior of people in the study
Grounded theory
A prediction of the relationship among two or more variables
Hypothesis
The presumed cause or influence on the dependent variable
Independent variable
Measures that describe the center of the distribution of data, denoting where most of the subjects lie; include the mean, median, and mode
Measures of central tendency
Measures that indicate the degree of dispersion or spread of the data; include range, variance, and standard deviation
Measures of variability he
Research that investigates peoples life experiences and how they interpret those experiences
Phenomenology
A predetermined and preprinted plan specifying the procedure to be followed in a particular situation
