Nature of language processing Flashcards
Serial Processing
process one thing at a time (more items = more time)
Parallel Processing
process everything at the same time (all aspects - more items = same amount of time)
Parallel distributed processing (PDP)
Views the mind as ‘massively parallel’ - simultaneously processing a large amount of information
Modular processing
processes operate independently
Interactive processing
processes interact and affect each other
Top-down processing
influenced by our knowledge, memories, and expectations (you perceive it - you use context, semantic, and syntactic information - language knowledge)
Bottom-up processing
based on information from the stimulus (sounds/visual features); sparse information
