Disease
A condition marked by subjective complaints, a specific history, critical signs and symptoms, and laboratory or radiographic findings.
Organic disease
diseases accompanied by specific anatomical changes such as the red spots associated with measles
Functional disease
no recognizable change in anatomy (like schizophrenia)
Infection
the state or condition in which the body or a part of it is invaded by a disease-causing agent that, under favorable conditions, multiplies and produces injurious effects
Deficiency
a lack of dietary or metabolic substance that can lead to disease
Heredity
based on genetic characteristics transmitted from parent to offspring
Diagnosis
the term denoting the naming of the disease or syndrome; the recognition of the nature of a particular disease
Prognosis
the prediction of the outcome of a particular illness, while the manner in which the disease develops is referred to as its pathogenesis
Pathogenesis
manner in which the disease develops
Complications
any unfavorable conditions arising during the course of a disease
Signs
the objective disturbances produced by a disease that can be observed by other people
Symptoms
the subjective disturbances caused by a specific disease that are felt or experienced only by the patient but are not directly measurable
Congenital
diseased that are present at birth
Acquired
diseases that present after birth
Acute
diseases that have a rapid onset and a short duration
Fulminating
a special type of acute disease characterized by a rapid and severe onset and they are usually fatal
Remission
the temporary cessation of the symptoms of a disease
Recurrence
symptoms of a disease after a period of remission
Communicable
disease that can be transmitted directly or indirectly from one individual to another. The infectious diseased can spread between populations or they can remain within a population
Prevalence
the number of cases of disease present in a specific population at given time
Sporadic
diseases occurring occasionally in a random isolated manner (e.g tetanus or lock jaw)
Pandemic
a disease that is epidemic, widespread, or even a worldwide event
Syndrome
a set of signs and symptoms associated with a particular disease (e.g AIDS)
Idiopathic
illnesses for which the cause is unknown
Iatrogenic
illness resulting from medical treatment
Nosocomial
Infections acquired in a hospital or other healthcare setting
Occupational disease
disease with an abnormally high rate of occurrence in members of a particular workforce (e.g black lung in miners)
Intoxication
a state of being poisoned by a drug or toxic substance
Infestation
harboring of animal parasites
Allergies
having hypersensitivity to a substance that does not normally cause a reaction
