Cellular Reaction to Injury Flashcards
Homeostasis
attempt by cells to maintain a relatively stable environment
Adaptation
as cells encounter changes in their environments, they respond in a process called adaptation
Degeneration
the deterioration of tissues with corresponding functional impairment as a result of injury or disease
Cellular Senescence
leads to alterations in cell’s abilities to replicate and repair, resulting in cellular degeneration leading to death of the cell
Cellular swelling
occurs when cells are unable to maintain the proper balance and concentration between ions and fluid levels
Osmotic pressure
the pressure that develops when two solution s of different concentrations are separated by a semipermeable membrane
varies with the concentration of the solution and with temperature increase
Isotonic
solutions exerting the same osmotic pressure as within the cell
Hypertonic solution
solution with a stronger osmotic pressure than the cell
a cell placed in a hypertonic solution will shrink
Hypotonic solution
weaker pressure; less concentrated; swell cell
