nature conservation Flashcards
Reasons for urban biodiversity conservation in cities
- cities can harbour a high biological richness, including endangered species
- cities as human population hotspots key for mainstreaming biodiversity (conservation)
- biodiversity benefits urban populations through associated ecosystem services
Shifting Baseline Syndrome
In the absence of past information or experience with historical conditions, members of each new generation accept the situation in which they were raised as being normal. This psychological and sociological phenomenon is termed shifting baseline syndrome (SBS).

German Nature Conservation Act
anthropocentric approach and ethical approach
- biodiversity conservation
- ecosystem functioning
- well-being of people
- appreciate the existence of value of nature
The Convention on Biological Diversity
entered in 1993, three main objectives:
- conservation of biological diversity
- sustainable use of the components of biological diversity
- the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources
When did nature conservation begin to develop in germany?
early 19th century, Romanticism
- appreciation of cultural and natural landscapes
- major aim: to protect natural and cultural landscapes in the face of accelerating industrialisation
biodiversity in the CBD
genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity
What is biodiversity in the CBD? (Convention of Biological Diversity)
“Biological diversity” means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
