how is king leopold significant to the scramble of africa
he set up the IAA and claimed his aim was to defeat/stop the slave trade however his actual aim was to ‘to get a slice of this delicious african cake’ (to get african colonies)
he encouraged pierre brazza (a french explorer) and stanley to organize expeditions in the name of the IAA to open up lower congo.
who was pierre brazza
he is a french explorer who went on an expedition to lower congo after much encouragement from king leopold. However he had orders to secretly annex lower congo for france without Leopold’s knowledge. He failed to do so but instead became a french hero and gained public support for french ambitions in congo.

they could no longer pay the interest on the money lent by european investors , Britain and france who were majority of shareholder in the suez canal company took over egypts finances
how did the british become the sole masters of egypt
in 1881 britain and france were challenged by a nationalist uprising uprising led by officers in the egyptian army the french government refused the dispatch of french troops and britain were left to deal with the uprising alone. the british won and became the masters of egypt.They did not leave despite repeated assurance that they would once order was restored
