Explain the Fashoda incident
- A clash between britain and france over Fashoda
-France was expanding eastwards from French West Africa while britain was expanding southwards from France.
-They both claimed Sudan for their respective countries.
-They both began to mobilise their fleets but reached a compromise , France recognised British possesions of Egypt and Sudan and Britain acknowledged the French presence in morocco
Germany’s place in the sun
-kaiser Wilhelm embarked on a policy of Weltpolitik (world policy) this involved seeking overseas possessions - ‘place in the sun” as he termed it.
-Britain saw German acquisitions in Africa as a threat to its own strategic and commercial interests.
-Germany embarked on a naval development programme in 1906 arguing that it was necessary to protect its overseas trade and empire
Entente Cordiale
-Britain and France signed the entente cordiale which ended antagonisms between the two and paved their way for cooperation against Germany.
Increased tensions between France and Britain because of germany’s imperial policy.
German naval development caused alarm in Britain which argued that Germany’s possessions were not enough to warrant such a large navy
-Both Britain and France felt threatened by Germany’s foreign policy which led to a naval race that increased tensions between the two.
-Britain was concerned that its own navy was dispersed around the world Germany’s navy would be concentrated in the North Sea which posed a threat to its security.
