GE interaction
Genes x environment
What is gene expression
It’s the process by which the DNA sequence of a gene is converted into functional protein structures
What do genetics determine?
What specific proteins are synthesised
What do epigenetics determine?
How much of proteins are made, and where and when it is synthesised
What sis DNA methylation?
Methyl groups attach to DNA compacting it and preventing it’s code from being read or made into proteins
What did Weaver et al (2004) study?
Maternal licking in offspring behaviour
What do high nurturing rats mothers raise?
Low anxious offspring
What do nurturing rats behaviour do?
Shapes her pups epigenomes: in offspring a low-nurturing mother’s Nr3c1 is switched off and leads to a higher level of stress and anxiety
What happens to the epigenetic pattern the rat mum establishes?
It stays put, even after the pups become adults
What is the gene environment correlation?
When individuals with a genetic propesnsity for a trait in the environments, choose or create the environments that support the expression of that trait
Types of GE correlation
Passive, evocative, active
What is passive rGE?
Parental genes influence parental behaviours that play a role in determining the kind of rearing environment they provide
What is evocative rGE?
The child genes influence the child behaviours that play a role in evoking different types of responses in other people
