Q

What are the plates doing at oceanic ridges?

A

Plates moving apart.
Magma then forced its way to the surface, cooling and forming new crust.
As plates moves further apart , new crust is carried away from ridge.

Q

Describe process of subduction.

A

Denser oceanic plate subjects underneath continental plate into Benioff zone in mantle.
Further it descends the hotter surroundings become.
This together with heat generated from friction begins to melt oceanic plate into magma.
Less dense molten magma begins to rise in plutons.
Eventually reaches surfaces as volcano.

Q

What type of volcanoes does andesitic lava create?

Q

How else can island arcs form?

A

When 2 oceanic plates meet one is forced under the other, subsequent subduction occurs.

Q

Example of Rift Valley

A

East Africa
Brittle crust fractures as sections move apart.
Areas of crust drop down between parallel faults to form Rift Valleys.
Crust here is much thinner than neighbouring crust meaning tension and friction is causing plague to split.
Thinning plate allows magma to force its way up to the surface to form volcano.

16
Q

What happens at hot spots ?

A

Plume of magma rises to eat plate above it.

When lava breaker through crust an active volcano forms directly above spot as it provides volcano with heat sourcez

17
Q

What type of volcano appears at hot spot ?

A

Huge
Flattish

Shield volcanoes

(Basaltic lava)

18
Q

What is happening to hotspot in Hawaii?

A

Hot spot is stationary so as pacific plate moves over it a line of volcanoes is created.

Active one above hotspot.

Extinct ones form a chain

From the chain of extinct volcanoes
the plate is moving north west

Oldest plates put weight on crust causing subsidence, this with marine erosion has reduce volcanoes to sea mounts.

19
Q

How much is pacific plate moving a year in Hawaii?

A

10 cm yr-1

20
Q

Oldest volcano in Hawaii ?

A

Kauai

3.8 million years old
