Gravitation Sliding, Ridge Push and Slab Pull Flashcards
With distance what happens to the lithosphere?
It thickens away from the mid oceanic ridge.
Why does the lithosphere thicken with distance from the mid oceanic ridge?
Because it cools with distance and the boundary between the solid lithosphere and plastic asthenosphere becomes deeper.
The result of the thickening with distance from the ridges means what?
The lithopshere/asthenopshere boundary sloped away from the ridge.
Gravity acting on weight of lithosphere near the ridge pushed the older part of plate infront - ridge push.
Following subduction what happens?
Lithosphere sinks into mantle under its own weight helping to pull the rest of the plate with it - slab pull.
