Natural selection and genetic modification Flashcards
What is Darwin’s theory?
The idea that organisms have variation, the better suited variations survive and characteristsics are passed down generations
How does bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
There are random mutations that are then passed on through generations
What did apes use that show intellectual eveolution?
Flint stones, axes, arrow heads
What does it mean if fossils are more complex?
They are newer
What is classification?
How organisms are classed
What are the categories of classification?
Kingdom eg animal, phylum eg vertebrae, class eg mamal, order eg carnivarious, family eg cat, genus eg big cat, species eg lion
What does King Philip Calls Old Family Geniuses Soon stand for?
Kingdom, Phelum, Class, Family, Genus, Species
What are the breeding steps?
1 Decide best characteristics
2 Choose parents that show these and breed them
3 Choose best offspring and breed
4 Repeat
What does variation lead to?
Different genotypes (ATGC) causes different phenotypes (characteristics)
Define mutation
Change in gene or chromosome which if better suited can cause adaptation
What is an allele?
Different versions of same gene eg green or brown eyes
What are chromosomes?
Long threads of DNA in nucleus
What are the haploid cells?
Sperm and egg/ pollen and egg
Define genes
Small section of DNA in a chromosome, they are codes for sequence of amino acids
