Natural Selection Flashcards

1
Q

Struggle for existence

A

Species tend to produce excessive numbers of offspring but there are limited resources. Leads to struggle for existence among the individuals of a population (not every individual can survive)

Q

Variation

A

Exists between members KF the same species. Much of the variation is inheritable so it can be passed between generations . With a variety of traits, it allows individuals with the better traits to pass down their traits for survival

Q

Survival of the fittest

A

Sometimes a certain variation is better suited to the local environment. Individuals with more favourable variations are more likely to survive and pass them on, Darwin defined the fitness of an individual as it’s ability to survive and reproduce in its specific habitat (measured in ability to survive and reproduce )
