Difference Between Sympatric And Allopatric Speciation Flashcards
Allopatric
The evolution of populations into a seperate soecies as a result of geographic isolation. Happens when soecies are isolated due to physical barriers like rivers or mountains, over time the species can undergo genetic change due to natural selection. Eg squirrels of Grand Canyon. Squirrels came from same ancestor but become isolated bc of Grand Canyon, resulted in differences in behaviours and physical characteristics
Sympatric speciation
The evolution of populations within the same geographic area into seperate species. Can occur due to behavioural changes, or genetic mutations that leads to differences in mating preferences or timing. Eg applemaggof flies used to lie eggs on hawthorn fruit, when apples were introduced to North America, flies preferred the apples, leading to reproductive isolation, both species mate with their respective fruit types resulting in speciation
