Natural Selection Flashcards
Describe the concept ‘survival of the fittest’.
organisms most suited / adapted to their environment than others.
These individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce.
Two populations of the same bird species are separated by a mountain range. Over time, the populations of birds develop different beak shapes. Suggest how this could have happened.
There are different environmental conditions either side of the mountain range
Some individuals will have beaks that allow them to acquire and eat the food more easily than others.
Those with the advantageous beak shape are more likely to get food, survive and reproduce.
Advantageous beak shape is passed down to offspring and over time, the trait will become common within the population.
Explain now variations in a species occur
Mutation
Change in genetic code
Gets passed onto offspring
Why dues a specie need to adapt?
Changes in environment
New predators
What does GENIE stand her?
G - genetic variation
E- environment/competition
N- natural selection
I- inheritance
E- evolution
