Genetic Engineerig Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
Genome is modified so that the gene of one organism is cut and transferred to another organism to produce a desired characteristic
How are genes transferred in genetic engineering?
Through a vector like plasmids or viruses
Give ways that GE is used?
GM bacteria to produce human insulin
GM crops to produce a higher yield
GM crops to add nutrients
Gm crops to become resistant against herbicides so it can kill weed without damaging the plant
GM plants to survive extreme weather
What are the stages of genetic engineering?
Identify gene you want to transfer from an organism
Cut the gene
Isolate using enzymes
Transfer gene into a vector
Insert the virus or plasmid into target organism at early stages
What is an advantage of producing GM crops?
Higher yield
Longer shelf life
More profit
More resistant
Ripen faster
Why do people have concerns of eating GM crops?
Side effect unknown
Effects on gene pool
What are disadvantages of GE?
Reduce biodiversity
Unkown side effects
Wildlife contamination
Why is GE done at early stages?
So that all of gene is transferred in order to fully get a desired characteristic
Why might smaller farms not grow GM crops?
It is expensive
