Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What is ovulation?
The release of an egg from the ovary every 28 days
What does the pituitary gland release?
FSH and LH
What is the role of FSH?
Stimulates growth and maturation of the egg
What is the role of oestrogen?
Thickens the lining of the uterus
Inhibits FSH
What is the role of LH?
Triggers ovulation so egg is released
What is the role of progesterone?
Maintains the lining of the uterus
Egg gets released if fertilised
Inhibits LH
Explain how injections of FSH could increase chance of having a baby.
FSH Stimulates the maturation of eggs for fertilisation
It also stimulates production of oestrogen
One type of contraceptive pill keeps the level of progesterone high for most of the cycle.
Progesterone inhibits lh so there is no ovulation
