Natural Selection Flashcards
1
Q
What does natural selection lead to
A
Leads to evolution in populations
2
Q
Process of natural selection
A
- new alleles created by genes are created by a random mutations
- if the new alleles increases the chances of the individual to survive in that environment, then the are more likely to survive and reproduce
- this reproduces passes on the advantageous allele to the next generation
- as a Result over many generations, the new allele increase in frequency in the population
3
Q
2 types of selection
A
- directional selection
- stabilising selection
4
Q
Describe directional selection
A
- extreme trait has a selective advantage
- occurs when change in the environment
- over time population without the advantageous allele will not survive to reproduce
5
Q
Describe stabilising selection
A
- model traits have the selective advantage
- occurs when no change in the environment
- traits at extreme less likely to survive
