Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
What does meiosis involve
A
- 2 divisions
- Creates 4 haploid daughter cells
2
Q
What causes genetic variations in meiosis
A
- Crossing over between homologous chromosomes
- independent segregation of homologous chromosomes
3
Q
Independent segregation
A
- occurs during metaphase 1
- homologous pairs of chromosomes line up opposite each these at the equator
- random which side of the equator the paternal and maternal chromosomes from each homologous pair lie
- pair are separate to either end of the cell
- creates large possible combinations
4
Q
Crossing over
A
- occurs prophase 1
- chromosomes line up opposite each other at the equator
- chromatids become twisted, creating tension, chromatids break
- chromatids recombine with another chromatid
- creates new combinations of alleles
5
Q
How does meiosis differ from mitosis
A
Meiosis
- 2 divisors
- haploid cells
- introduces genetic variations
Mitosis
- 1 nuclear division
- diploid cell
- genetically identical cells
6
Q
How to identify meiosis
