Q

Independent segregation

A
  • occurs during metaphase 1
  • homologous pairs of chromosomes line up opposite each these at the equator
  • random which side of the equator the paternal and maternal chromosomes from each homologous pair lie
  • pair are separate to either end of the cell
  • creates large possible combinations

Q

Crossing over

A
  • occurs prophase 1
  • chromosomes line up opposite each other at the equator
  • chromatids become twisted, creating tension, chromatids break
  • chromatids recombine with another chromatid
  • creates new combinations of alleles

Q

How does meiosis differ from mitosis

A

Meiosis
- 2 divisors
- haploid cells
- introduces genetic variations
