Natural Resources Flashcards
What is Geology
Study of rocks
How old is the Earth
4.6 billion years old
What are natural resources
Materials found in nature that we need to survive
What are the 4 spheres
Biosphere, Hydrosphere,Lithosphere and Atmosphere
What is biosphere
All living matter
What is hydrosphere
All water such as lakes, rivers and oceans
What is lithosphere
The Earth’s Crust like landforms, rocks and soils
What is the atmosphere
Fragile Layers of gases that surround the earth
What does it mean for something to be renewable
Can be replaced in a natural process quickly
What does it mean for something to be non renewable
They can take millions of years to make again. Examples of this are coal and oil.
What are the 4 parts of the geological timescale
1- Precambrian
2- Palezoic
3- Mesozoic
4- Cenozoic
What are the 3 types of rock
Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic
What are sedimentary rocks
They are formed under the sea as rock particles are carried. An example is gravel this type of rock is used for making concrete and cement
What are igneous rocks
They are formed from molten rocks from volcanoes. The rocks cool slowly allowing minerals to form large crystals. Granite is an example and it is used to make buildings
What are metamorphic rocks
They form by existing rocks under great heat or pressure. The rocks melt and create new minerals like slate. They can be used for roof tiles
What are the 3 points sustainability should follow
It should not damage the environment.
The local people should be happy.
The workers are payed a fair amount.
Why is palm oil damaging
It is an oil made from a specific type of tree, resulting in deforestation and animals losing habitats so they can be grown. It is used in many things like cosmetics and food
What is a biome
An area with similar climate and animals
What are the 5 layers of a forest in order
Forest floor, Shrub layer, Under canopy layer, Canopy layer and Emergent layer
Describe the canopy layer in a forest
Fully grown trees
Describe the under canopy layer in a forest
Small trees
Describe the Emergent layer
Tall trees above all the others
Describe the shrub layer
Ferns and fungi are in the layer due to the lack of sunlight
Describe the forest floor layer
Very few plants grow and it does not have any trees but it provides nutrients to the plants
Around how many species are in a rainforest
200,000
What was damaging rainforests in 2019
Fires
What did the government offer for people to live in the highway
Free land which ended being used for pastureland
Who helped the Prime Minister in 2003 to help the rainforests
Marina Silva
How much of the rainforest was protected in 2012
47%
