Natural resources Flashcards
A natural material that is used by humans, such as water, petroleum, minerals, forests, and animals.
Natural resource
A natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed.
Renewable resource
A nonrenewable energy resource formed from the remains of organisms that lived long ago.
Fossil Feul
Occurs when a neutron slams into a larger atom, forcing it to excite and split into two smaller atoms.
Nuclear Fission
Two light nuclei merge to form a single heavier nucleus.
Nuclear Fusion
Use a propulsion system similar to that of electric vehicles, where energy stored as hydrogen is converted to electricity by the fuel cell.
Nitrogen fuel cell vehicle
The energy received by the earth from the sun in the form of radiation.
Solar Energy
The process by which the wind is used to generate mechanical power or electricity.
wind energy
A resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is consumed.
Nonrenewable resource
Electrical energy produced by falling water.
Hydroelectric energy
Organic matter that can be a source of energy.
Biomass
A renewable fuel made from corn and other plant materials.
Ethanol
Heat derived within the sub-surface of the earth.
Geothermal energy
A liquid mixture of complex and hydrocarbon compounds.
Petroleum
A mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons located under the surface of the earth, often near petroleum deposits.
Natural gas
A fossil fuel that forms underground from a partially decomposed plant material.
Coal
A clean-burning alternative fuel.
Propane
Fuel for cigarette lighters and portable stoves, a propellant in aerosols, a heating fuel, a refrigerant, and in the manufacture of a wide range of products.
Butane
Power produced by the surge of ocean waters during the rise and fall of tides.
Tidal energy
A form of renewable energy that can be harnessed from the motion of the waves.
Wave energy
