Erosion Flashcards
Process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another.
Erosion
The breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth.
Weathering
Continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean.
Water Cycle
The process that changes liquid water to gaseous water.
Evaporation
The process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water.
Condensation
Water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Precipitation
Water running off the land surface.
Surface Runoff
Stream that flows into a lake pr into a larger stream.
Tributary
Area of land that is drained by a river system.
Watershed
Area of high ground that separated watersheds.
Continental Divide
Process in which material is laid down.
Deposition
Fan-shaped mass of material deposited at the mouth of a stream.
Delta
An area along a river that forms from sediments deposited when the river overflows its banks.
Floodplain
The upper surface of underground water
Water Table
A facility in which a combination of various processes are used to treat industrial wastewater and remove pollutants.
sewage Treatment Plants
A buried, water-tight container usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene.
Septic Tank
Isolated outcrops of rock standing in the ocean.
Sea Stacks
Develops when a headland protruding into the ocean causes waves to refract around it.
Sea Arches
Formed primarily from erosion caused by waves.
Sea Caves
A shallow-water shelf inclining gently away from the base of an eroded sea cliff.
wave-cut Terraces
A point of usually high land jutting out into a body of water.
Headlands
A narrow, gently sloping strip of land that lies along the edge of an ocean, lake, or river.
Beach
A glacier is a large, perennial accumulation of crystalline ice, snow, rock, sediment, and often liquid water that originates on land and moves down slope.
Glacier
A general term applied to all rock material transported by a glacier and deposited directly by or from the ice, or by running water emanating from a glacier.
Glacier Drift
Unsorted material deposited directly by glacial ice and showing no stratification.
Till
Sediments deposited by glacial melt water that are sorted and layered
Stratified Drift
