Natural Resources Flashcards
What are natural resources?
Materials from the Earth that are used to support life and meet people’s needs. They are not man-made.
What are the two types of natural resources?
Renewable and non-renewable resources.
What is a renewable natural resource?
Resource that is available in infinite quantities and can be used repeatedly.
What is a non-renewable resource?
A resource that is finite and limited in abundance. They might run out in the future.
What is are three examples of renewable resources?
Wind, water, solar, biomass, geothermal, trees
What are three examples of non-renewable resources?
Oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear energy.
What is solar power?
Energy that comes from the sun.
What is wind energy?
Energy generated by the turning of wind turbines.
What is biomass energy?
Organic material from plants and animals.
What is geothermal energy?
Comes from the heat generated deep with the Earth’s core.
What is hydropower energy?
Energy that uses the power of moving water to generate electricity.
What is crude oil?
A liquid fuel that is used mostly to produce gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles. It’s also used to make plastic.
What is natural gas?
Used to cook and heat homes. It consists of mostly methane.
What is coal?
A solid fuel that is used for heating and generating.
How are fossil fuels formed?
They are formed from the remains of plants and animals over a long period of time.
