differentiating human actsfrom acts of man.
ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
❖ There is a need or a clearer
basis of ethics, a ground that will
more concretely direct our
sense of what is wrong and right
❖ For Aquinas, there should be
Natural Law
CONTEXT
❖AQUINAS reminds us that we
cannot simply act in pursuit of
our own ends or good without
any regard for other people’s
end or good.
❖We are not isolated beings, but
beings who belong in it.
COMMUNITY
reminds us that we
cannot simply act in pursuit of
our own ends or good without
any regard for other people’s
end or good.
AQUINAS
What is good for the community as
well as our own good. This can be
called
COMMON GOOD
❖ A system in which
actions are seen as
morally and ethically
correct if t accords
with the end purpose
of human nature and
human goals.
NATURAL LAW
therefore, is
concerned with the
COMMON GOOD.
LAW
We should recognize the proper measure
or the limits in our acts in a way that we
can pursue ends, about our own and that of
others, together. The determination of the
proper measure of our acts can be
referred to as
LAW
❖ It refers to all
instances wherein
human being construct
and enforce laws in
their community
HUMAN LAW
❖ It refers specifically
to the instances
where we have what
is handed down to us
in sacred scripture
DIVINE LAW
❖ It is what God wills
for His creation and
how each participant
in it is intended to
return to Him who is
eternal and infinite,
the Perfect Being
ETERNAL LAW
❖ It is a moral doctrine in
Catholic theology that states an
action can be permissible if it has
both good and bad effects, as long
as the intention is to produce the
good effect
PRINCIPLE OF DOUBLE EFFECT
The action itself must be
morally good or at least neutral.
(GOOD)The action is good or neutral
The good effect must be the intended result. Not the bad effect.
(INTENDED) 2. THE GOOD EFFECT IS INTENDED
The good effect must not be a direct result of the bad effect
(CAUSE) THE GOOD EFFECT IS NOT CAUSED BY THE BAD EFFECT
