Natural Hazards Flashcards

1
Q

What is a natural hazard

A

A natural event (for example earthquake, volcanic eruption, tropical storm, flood) that threatens people or has the potential to cause damage, destruction and death

Q

What is a natural event

A

Is where something happens for example a bush fire and where nobody gets hurt from it because it is not hurting anyone

Q

What is a tectonic natural hazard

A

Earthquake
Tsunami
Volcanoes
They involve the movement of tectonic plates in the earths crust

Q

What is the earths structure

A

The earth structure is divided into layers. The centre is called the core which is extremely hit and under a lot of pressure. The inner core is solid and the outer core is liquid. The mantle surrounds the core it is made out of a solid material that can flow very slowly. Asthenosphere which can be deform like plastic. The outmost later is called the crust which is very thin compared to the mantle and the core

Q

How do tectonic plates move

A

The magma rises to the mantle and sinks towards the core when it cools. The currents flow beneath the lithosphere building up pressure which carries the plates with them

13
Q

Where are earthquakes and volcanoes located

A

They are not randomly distributed. There pattern matches when plate margins are located earthquakes are found of all three types of plate margins whereas volcanoes are only found of to constructive and destructive

14
Q

Ho do plates move at constructive margins

A

They move when tectonic plates move apart from each other

16
Q

How do conservative plate margins move

A

It occurs when tectonic plates move parallel to each other

17
Q

Why do people like in hazardous areas

A
Geothermal energy
Farming
Mining
Tourist
Family, friends and feelings
18
Q

What kinds of extreme weather events affect the U.K.

A

Main types are hydro-meteorological hazards: storms, flooding, drought and extreme cold weather
