Coastal Landscapes Flashcards
What are spits???
A sand or shingle beach that is joined by the land found when bend in coastline
How are spits formed???
They are formed by prevailing wind making swash at an angle
What is sliding???
Is when large amount of rock soil or mid slides down the cliff face
What is rockfall???
Is when the rock losses contact with the cliff face and fall at the bottom they cause a scree slope
Constructive waves???
They are found in sheltered bays and spits. They have a stronger swash then backwash
Destructive waves???
Are found in more exposed bays. They have a stronger backwash then swash
Chemical weathering???
Is caused by a chemical reaction when rainwater hits rock and decomposes it or eats it away
Mechanical weathering
Results in rocks disintegrated and is normally associated with extreme temperatures
Slumping???
Is when material is rotated backwards into the cliff face
Abrasion
Is when destructive waves have enough energy to hurl sand and shingle resulting in scratching and scraping of the rocks surface
Attrition
Happened’s when the sediment is moving it erodes the jagged edges to make them smooth
Hydraulic action
Is when destructive waves pound at the base of the cliff causes huge chunks to fall of due to the pressure
