Natural Hazards Flashcards
Define natural hazards
Something natural that can endanger people or buildings , causing deaths injuries or damage. It must threaten or affect humans to be called a hazard and be out of human control
When do you call a natural hazard a natural disaster
When a natural hazard does happen in real life
Give some examples of natural hazards
Any of:
Earthquakes
Volcanoes
Tsunamis
Tropical storms
Floods
Landslides
What are geological hazards
Hazards cause by tectonic plate movements, includes earthquakes volcanos landslides avalanches
What is a meteorological hazard
Hazards involving the atmosphere weather and climate includes heatwaves bushfires and hurricanes
What is hazard risk
The likelihood of an event caused by a natural hazard happening
What are the factors affecting hazard risk?
Ability to cope:
Different populations have different capabilities to deal with natural hazards/disasters
Population density:
If there are more people in an area it is more likely for more people to be affected by a natural hazard
Where people live:
Some people are more at risk from natural hazards depending on location
What is land that it is difficult to grow crops on called?
Marginal land
What three main factors affect how serious a natural hazard is?
Magnitude
Frequency
Predictability
What affects a country’s ability to cope with natural hazards?
Preparation- wealthy countries can afford better preparation
Income- HICs can afford more hazard resistant housing and infrastructure
