Glaciers Flashcards
What shaped valley is typically found after a glacier has melted?
A U-shaped valley
What are the two methods of erosion when talking about ice?
Plucking and Abrasion
What kind of weathering is commonly found around glaciers (cold temps)?
Freeze thaw weathering
What is an erratic?
Large boulders carried by glaciers and deposited far away from they’re place of origin (different rock type)
Is glacier sediment sorted or unsorted?
Unsorted
What is the difference between sorted and unsorted sediment?
Sorted sediment is when there is the same size if sediment in one spot, unsorted has all different sizes in the same spot
Why is glacier sediment unsorted?
It has the energy to carry any sediment at any point in the glacier
Describe a Drumlin
Smooth egg shaped hill about 10 meters high. Found in clusters on the floor of the glacial trough
How are drumlins formed
A moraine has been streamlined by ice, movement of glacier results in a blunt end facing up valley and a tapered end down valley
What is glacial till?
Sediment deposited by glacier, blankets glacier forefields
What is an example of a tarn (Corrie lake) in the UK?
Red tarn
What is an example of an arête in the uk?
Striding edge
What is an example of a pyramidal peak?
The Matterhorn
