Natural Hazards - 1 Flashcards
Natural Hazard and examples
A natural event that threatens people
or has the potential to cause damage,
destruction and death.
E.g: Earthquakes, Floods, Tsunamis
Tectonic Hazards and examples
Caused by movement of the tectonic
plates
E.g: Earthquakes, Volcanoes
Atmospheric Hazards and examples
Hazards created in the atmosphere
E.g: Tropical Storms, Droughts
Hazard Risk
The probability or chance that a
natural hazard may take place.
Earthquake
A sudden or violent movement within
the Earth’s crust followed by a series of
smaller shocks.
Volcanoes
An opening in the Earth’s crust from
which lava, ash and gases erupt.
Vulnerability
the potential of somewhere or someone to be harmed by these threats.
Capacity to cope
the ability of people, organizations and systems, using available skills and resources, to manage adverse conditions, risk or disasters
Nature of the NH
More warning for TS than earthquakes.
Higher magnitude = higher risk.
Factors increasing the risk from natural hazards
Urbanisation, Climate Change, Poverty, Farming
What is urbanisation and how is it a risk from natural hazards
An increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas
Densely populated
What is Climate change and how is it a risk for natural hazards
long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities
Warmer world means atmosphere has more energy for more intense storms and hurricanes
What is poverty and how does it risk natural hazards
Poorer people forced to live in areas of risk
e.g. unstable slopes in Lima in Peru
How is farming a risk to natural hazards
People choosing to live in low-lying countries prone to flooding
