Q

occurence and extraction

A
  • formed from decaying animal and plant matter that lived millions of years ago
  • found underground, trapped in deep shale formations
  • wells are drilled and due to the pressure of the pumped water the gas comes up to the surface and is pumped through pipelines
  • refined to removes unwanted chemical impurities and then shipped in tankers
  • Russia, Iran and Qatar have the largest reserves of natural gas

Q

advantages

A
  • cleaner fuel producing fewer carbon emissions than coal or oil
  • does not produce waste and disperses quickly in case of leaks
  • allows quick results and precise control
  • more abundant than other fossil fuels
  • easy to distribute and transport

Q

disadvantages

A
  • produces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to enhanced greenhouse effect
  • finite resources - cannot become reliant on it
  • if inhales, the gas is toxic and colorless so cannot be easily detected
  • storing gas is more expensive due to larger volume
  • pumping of gas and fracking increases tectonic activity

Q

peru

A
  • Camasea project was launched in 2004 to extract natural gas in the Amazon
  • predicted to save Peru $4 billion in energy costs
  • this came at the expense of the lives of indigenous tribes who lived in the area
  • deforestation took place to create infrastructure such as pipelines for the extraction process
  • offered within the $34 billion it was expected to offer over a 30 year lifespan in exports
