NATO Article 1?
To settle any international dispute by peaceful means.
NATO Article 2?
Contribute to the development of international relations and encourage economic collaborations.
NATO Article 3?
To maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack.
NATO Article 4?
Members consult together whenever the security of a member is threatened.
NATO Article 5?
An attack on one member is an attack on all members
NATO Article 6?
Supporting NATO Article 5 - Areas and belongings in which NATO Article 5 can be invoked.
- Europe or North America
- Territory of Turkey
- Islands of members in the North Atlantic or north of the Tropic of Cancer
NATO Article 7?
The treaty does not affect the rights and obligations of members of the UN and the primary responsibility of the UN Security Council.
NATO Article 8?
Declaration of no current conflict and future international engagement between current members and third parties are in the provision of the Treaty.
NATO Article 9?
Establishment of a Council of which each member is represented and a defence committee to implement measures for Article 3 and 5.
NATO Article 10?
Unanimous agreement to invite any European State into the Treaty. The invited State deposits its instruments to the US.
NATO Article 11?
The Treaty shall be ratified ASAP with the Government of the US and all other signatories will be notified.
NATO Article 12?
After 10 years or thereafter, the members can consult together for the purpose of reviewing the Treaty if factors of the Treaty affecting peace and security in the North Atlantic.
NATO Article 13?
After 20 years, a member may cease to be a member after a year notice to the US, who will inform the members for notice of denunciation.
NATO Article 14?
The Treaty is equally authentic in both English and France. The original copy is kept in America and copies are sent to each member.
Changes in NATO Articles
- The Territories to which Article 5 applies is revised by Article 2 on the accession of Greece and Turkey - 22 October 1951.
- On January 16, 1963, Algerian Departments of France has become inapplicable from July 3, 1962
- Treaty came into force on 24 August 1949 after the ratification of all members
