What does NATO stand for?
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - a transatlantic link connecting North America with Europe to enable consulting and cooperation in both defence and security.
What is the prime purpose of NATO?
To safeguard the security and freedom of its members through political and military means.
Does NATO have an armed force?
All member of NATO contribute their forces and equipment to NATO but stay in their respected countries till required.
Although NATO does possess equipment such AWaCS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems)
What are the conditions for joining NATO?
Any European country, willing to further the Washington Treaty and contribute to Euro-Atlantic security.
NATO also MAP (Membership Action Plan), to prepare aspiring members to meet requirements by providing practical advice and targeted assistance.
How does NATO act through political means?
NATO promotes democratic values and enables members to consult (Article 4) and cooperate on defence and security-related issues to solve problems, build trust and prevent conflict in the long term
How does NATO act through military means?
NATO is committed to peaceful resolution. If diplomatic efforts fail, NATO undertakes crisis-management ops (Article 5).
What is crisis management?
It involves military and non-military measures to address the full spectrum of a crisis - before, during and after conflicts.
What is NATO’s core tasks?
In the 2010 Strategic Concept: Collective defence, cooperative security and crisis management
How does NATO make decisions?
Consensus decision-making - no voting takes place and until a decision that is acceptable to all is reached. Due to constant interaction between members, negotiations are quick as often members know and understand each other’s positions in advance.
