Secure peace in Europe, promote cooperation among its members and to guard their freedom. Counter threat at the time from the Soviet Union.

29 member states. Soon to be 30 when North Macedonia join after settling dispute with Greece.
How many members made up NATO initially?
12.
Belgium, France, GB, Italy, Denmark, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, US
Where is NATO HQ?
Initially in Paris, France but due to France leaving NATO in 1966, moved to Brussels. France later rejoined in 2009.
What is article 5?
The corner stone of NATO. An attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all.
Where are NATO operating today?
Afghan - Operation Resolute - non-combat, providing training to Afghan Security forces. Kosovo.

Who can join NATO?
NATO’s Membership Action Plan (MAP) is designed to assist other countries to join. They must meet certain political, economical and military requirements.
