When was NATO formed and member countries start and present?
4th of April 1949 in Washington D.C. originally formed of 12 European and North American members. 32 Member states with Sweden most recently joining.
Why was NATO formed?
NATO was formed to safeguard the freedom and security of its member states from the rising threat of the Soviet Union by political and military means. Article 5 states an attack on any member is an attack on all and necessary action will be taken against the threat whether political or military.
What does NATO do today?
Even though the Cold War ended in 1991 and the Soviet Union dissolved in 1992 NATO has a very prevalent role today. Since 9/11 NATO has been involved in preventing International terrorism in the Mediterranean sea. NATO has also deployed 3700 partner troops to Kosovo to help halt the humanitarian disaster and widespread violence. Current NATO Navy activity?
