What happened in 1824?
Bureau of Indian Affairs set up and 1st trail through the Rocky mountains discovered.
1830- Indian removal act
46,000 Indians from Eastern states are forced by the US government to re-locate to the Great Plains, an area the whites did not want
1834- Indian Trade and Intercourse act
Sets out the permanent Indian Frontier which divided Indian territory from the Eastern states
1846, who bought the USA from Britain?
Oregon
1846-The Donner Party
The migration of 300 people to California that which failed, leading to cannibalism and eventual rescue in 1847
1846-87- The Mormon migration
Migration of those from the Mormon faith westwards to find their homeland. They settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
1848- America wins the war against Mexico
This gives America new territories to the South and West of Indian territory
1849- Gold rush
The discovery of Gold in California led to huge migration to the West, over 300,000 moved by 1855
1851- The Fort Laramie Treaty
An agreement between Indians and government that Indians would not attack settlers using Oregon trail- in exchange for large areas of land being given to Indians βfor all timeβ

Band
A group of people, mostly families who formed part of a larger tribe, for example of Ogala Sioux.
Buffalo
A plains animal that was central to Indian life
Chief
Leader of the band/tribe but not elected. Became chief due to wisdom, healing power or skills as a warrior.
Counting Coup
Touching an enemy in battle and getting away without being injured.
Manifest Destiny
Idea it was Godβs will that white Americans should settle over all of America
Miners Courts
Miners who set up their own court to settle disputes over claims
Nomadic
People who do not live in one place
Pioneer
The first explorers

Having more than one wife

People looking for gold mines
Sheriff
Individuals responsible for keeping the law in counties
Sioux
The biggest tribe on the Plains, made up of smaller tribes and bands eg. Ogala, Hunkpapa and Dakota
Tribal Council
A group of elders/chiefs who made decisions for the tribe/band
The Oregon Trail
A 3000 km long trail used by those who wanted to reach California from Missouri. It crossed the Great Plains
Tipi
Home of the Plains Indians, made out of Buffalo hide and wood. Could be packed up quickly
Scalping
Taking the scalp of a person a warrior has beaten as a prize and to stop them coming back in the afterlife.
Vigilantes
Ordinary citizens that decides to punish suspected lawbreakers itself instead of using the official system
Warrior society
A group of warriors from a band who hunted and protected the band
