Von herder (key) 1744-1803- was a main thinker behind cultural nationalism (every nation is distinct based on its cultural character). his ideas were formed as part of a romantic reaction against rational ideas of the Enlightenment; he wrote at a time where there was a growing nationalist movement among Germans when it was not yet one unified nation-state.

Murrass (key) 1868-1952 was a french writer throughout both world wars. was a supporter of the vichy regime (pro-fascist, the govt of unoccupied france during wwii) as he saw it as a means to restore traditional french values and order, but he did not like nazism, viewing it as a foreign ideology and a threat to french independance. founded the 1899 journal ,’action francaise’ that was pro monarchy, anti semetic and anti democratic.

Rousseau (key) 1712-1778- Was the father of civic nationalism and a key thinker behind the French Revolution, wrote ‘The social contract’ 1762. ideas: social contract, general will, rule of law, collective sovereignty
mazzini (key) 1805-1872- seeking to overthrow the influence of Austria in Italy, he placed a strong emphasis on self-determination.

Marcus Garvey (key) 1887-1940- wrote throughout the continued civil rights movement in the earlier half of the 20th century. Founded Universal Negro Improvement Association that attempted to counteract the lack of education many african americans experienced. he was comitted to the ‘back to africa/ movement, arguing the diaspora should move back. cooperated with kkk in the interest of advancing their shared goal of ‘racial separatism’.
