expansionist nationalists on everything (Murass) Flashcards
expansionist nationalists on human nature
HUMANS NATURALLY BELONG IN NATIONS
Humans are emotional and drawn to the familiar. ethnic identity is a key aspect of our consciousness. ideas of fraternity (that have emerged through the revolution) has caused people to become too close to inferior peoples. the interests and consciousness of individuals should be suppressed in favour of a collective identity. ‘a true nationalist places his country above everything’
human nature is immutable- because some races are naturally and biologically inferior to others (racialism)- e.g hitler against jews, ‘mein kampf’ ‘
expansionist nationalists on the state. Large state, Hereditary monarchy(just murass) and unequal states, “french glory”
states are not of equal status to each other, some people/states are superior/inferior to others. superiotity lied with Frances states the institution that unites france should help them return to a previous sense of “french glory.”
maurass advocated for a strong centralised state led by a monarch or authoritarian ruler; he believed in the importance of order, hierarchy and traditionalist values, seeing the state as an emmbodiement of the nations collective will and idenitity. hereditary monarchist; he velieved the ;excessive attatchment to democract funamentally weakened nation-states.
LARGE STATE IS NEEDED FOR THE MILITARY AND ORGANISATIONAL STRENGTH TO RUN COLONIES
‘For monarchy to work, one man must be wise. For democracy to work, a majority of people must be wise. Which is more likely?’
strong state- ‘Subordination is not servitude, nor is authority tyranny.’
context; murass lived through both world wars and was a strong supporter of the ‘vichy’ regime (unoccupied france through out ww2) as he saw it as a return to stability, a restoration of traditional french values and a return to ‘french glory’ but he opposed nazism as it was seen as undue influence from another state.
expansionist nationalists on society
society is held together by shared national characteristics; shared historical lineage/race. (both murass and hitler were anti semetic) exclusive and chauvinistic- ones own society is superior to others.
murass believed in ‘integral nationalism’- anti-individualistic– wanting members of the nation to be swept away in this wave of patriotism and the will of the nation,
‘a true nationalist places his country above everything’
HITLER: organic theory ‘volksgemeinschaft’- peoples community. society is like an organic entity that =, like a living organism, requires unity, cohesion and purity to thrive. (justified the idea of ‘racial hygiene and nazi eugenics)
expansionist nationalists on the economy
the nation-state should have some control over the economy
accepting of capitalism with heavy state control of the economy as opposed to a free market; want the strongest most domineering economy possible. e.g hitlers ‘autarky’- focusing focusing on domestic production and stopping imports
murass wrote negatively about the (communist) paris commune of 1871 when a radical socialist govt took power- one which marx wrote positively about
