conservative nationalists on everything (von herder) Flashcards
conservative nationalists on human nature
humans naturally belong within nations, ‘he that has lost his patriotic spirit has lost himself”
humans are emotional, drawn to the familiar and human nature does not fundamentally change. (immutable)
we are irrational and emotional as well as seeking the familiar/traditional- drawn to the known which shows hostility to immigration and xenephobic tendencies
conservative nationalists on society
society is held together by shared national characteristics - particular shared traditions, culture (culturalism) ethnic allegiance.
e.g the ‘volkgeist’ is the romantic idea of the spirit of a nation in his book ‘of german character and art’ 1773
more inward looking, exclusive view of society which can have xenephobic tendencies e.g trump restricting immigration and free trade to maintain a distinctive us culture.
exclusive herder: ‘each nationality contains its centre of happiness within itself’
society is not exclusive on race, but on culture; it takes a long time to become a member of a nation as you first need to learn language, history, norms etc, “there is but one and the same species of man throughout the earth’
conservative nationalists on the economy
accepts nationalism
but, economic nationalism and trade protectionism is important. e.g tarrifs on imports (trumps trade war against china, retaliatory tarrifs)
nativism: placing the economuic or social interests of natives above immigrants–e.g they get first picks on employment.
conservative nationalists on the role of the state
the state should just reinforce the nations shared culture through limiting the rapid cultural changes associated with immigration, national holidays and etc.
e.g PM of india Narenda Modi- conservative nationalist as he wants a nation built on hinduism and hindi- explaining the persecution of muslims in inida.
