Who is Julius Nyerere?
Tanzanian independence leader had a mission to fulfill 3 commitments to Tanzania:
- African identity
- Equality: he critiques capitalism, cuz it equal inequality and socialism=equality
- human dignity: adamant about self reliance because he said that poverty was what led Africans to be oppressed and exploited so Tanzanians would not rely on money for development, only self realiance (not isolationist though)
What was his goal with self reliance?
To deemphasize a dependency on international finance capital and focus on agriculture which he thought was the basis of development and it built anatomical identity
What was a downfall to him?
He romanticized the TAS
He overgeneralized and out TAS claims on all of Africa
He wasn’t fully aware/failed to recognize the true conditions in the Tanzania of his time
His e pediment failed economically but did created a unified and integrated country cuz he applied his socialist tendencies to independent Tanzania
What was his critique of TAS?
He wanted to move away form capitalism and toward TAS but he said that first they need to remove poverty and the treating of women as below
What are the challenges to this Nyerere’s system?
Nationalization m: cuz now it’s state control which did not guarantee effective restructuring
Villagization scheme: cuz it was met with reluctance and it was expensive to incentivize so forced collectivization?
Also a dictatorship could be possible cuz it was not a multi party system
