Leprosy caused by bacteria microbacterium leprae, primarily effects the peripheral nervous system causing skin lesions , numbness and other deformities.
In 2005 India declared it has eliminated laprosy.
India’s still accounts for around 60% of world’s new leprosy patients.
National health policy 2002 define leprosy free as reporting less than one case for 10000 population at National level.
According to NLEP 2020-21 report , 94.75% patients in India were cured.
