what Do NaSSa’s do?
A
- block presynaptic alpha 2 adrenoceptors
- increasing noradrenergic and serotonergic neurotransmission

what is an example of a NaSSa? (1)
what are the Side effects of NaSSas?
A
- mirtazapine
- weight gain, sedation (although this can be good)
- safer in overdose
- fewer SE/s than traditional antidepressants
- more sedating at lower doses

What is the function of MAOIs?
A
- inhibit enzymatic breakdown of noradrenaline, serotonin, dopamine and tyramine

what can you not do on MAOIs?
A
- eat foods rich in tyramine (marmite, pickled herring, red wine)
- causes hypertension
- these are last resort drugs, not often used
