Nasal Polyps Flashcards
Nasal polyps
are benign pedunculated tumors formed from edematous, usually chronically inflamed nasal mucosa.
(antrochoanal polyp)
maxillary antrum polyps can extend to the nasopharynx, represent
4-6% of all nasal polyps in the general population, but 33% in the pediatric population.
The polyps originating from the ethmoidal sinus are usually_________&_________
smaller and multiple, as
compared with the large and usually single antro-choanal polyp.
_____________is the most common childhood cause of nasal polyposis
Cystic fibrosis
⏺ Samter triad,
nasal polyps + aspirin sensitivity + asthma.
Nasal polyposis is associated with
chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergy, asthma
Also with primary ciliary dyskinesia
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
▶️hyponasal speech and mouth breathing. ▶️ Profuse unilateral mucoid or mucopurulent rhinorrhea ▶️ fever and headache. ▶️snoring ▶️sleep apnea ▶️decrease smell👃
Treatment
🔴 Intranasal steroid sprays, and systemic steroids, may provide some shrinkage of nasal polyps with symptomatic relief and have proved useful in children with cystic fibrosis .
🔴Local or systemic decongestants are not usually effective in shrinking the polyps
⏺Polyps should be removed surgically if:
1- Complete obstruction uncontrolled rhinorrhea
2- deformity of the nose appears
3- Antrochoanal polyps: these types are not associated with any other disease process
recurrence rate is low.
If associated with chronic disease
recurrence rate is high
