Q
What is reverse sneezing?
A
an irregular snorting sound produced by vibration of the soft palate during forceful expiration.
Made worse by nasopharyngeal irritation.
Most common in small breed dogs.
No physical obstruction and the sound usually ceases if the dog is startled.
Does not cause obstructive dyspnoea or result in exercise intolerance.
No treatment is required.
Covering the nostrils is a good way to stop an attack as it forces the dog to mouth-breathe and interrupts the cycle of reverse sneezing.
