Nasal cavity Flashcards
Nose
Part of respiratory tract S to HP
- Contains the peripheral organs of smell
- Consists of the external nose and NCs, divided by a nasal septum.
- Each NC contains an olfactory area and a respiratory area
NC
Lined w/mucosa continuous w/lining of all chambers that communicate w/NC:
- nasopharynx P
- paranasal sinuses S & L
- lacrimal sac & conjunctiva S
- Respiratory area of nasal mucosa: I 2/3, olfactory area found S
NC bones
roof – (frontal), ethmoid, sphenoid bones; floor – maxilla and palatine, L walls – nasal conchae
L nasal wall
3 mucosa-covered scrolls of bone form L nasal walls and project M:
- S nasal concha
- middle nasal concha
- I nasal concha
- Each concha forms roof for meatus (recess).
- meati provide passageways to paranasal air sinuses and nasolacrimal duct.
Paranasal air sinuses
Air-filled extensions of respiratory part of NC located within several skull bones:
- frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, maxillary
warm, moisten, and filter inhaled air, lighten skull and provide resonating chambers for speech
PN sinus passageways
Spheno-ethmoidal recess: opening of sphenoidal sinus
- S meatus: entrance to P ethmoidal sinuses
- Middle meatus: entrance to frontal, ethmoidal, and maxillary sinuses
- I meatus: opening of nasolacrimal duct
CN I
Special sensory: olfactory epithelium covers S nasal concha and S portions of nasal septum
CN V1 and V2
- General sensory to nasal mucosa and palate via nasopalatine and greater palatine nerves
- Visceral motor: post-synaptic PSs to glands in mucosa (pre-synaptic PSs are delivered by CN VII)
