Narrative
A chain of events linked by cause and effect and occurring in time and space
Story
The chain of events in chronological order. The story is everything that is shown and not shown.
If a childhood abuse is inferred, that is part of the story, not the plot
Plot

Restricted narration
Knowledge is hidden from the viewer
Unrestricted knowledge
Knowledge is not hidden from the viewer
Omniscient narration
Another name for unrestricted narration
Diegesis
The total world of the story action
Non-diegetic elements
Elements that are brought in from outside the story world - characters cannot hear music or read the credits
Character complex
When a character possesses several varying traits, some at odds with others
Story duration
How long the story takes - e.g. 7 years
Screen duration
How long the film itself lasts - e.g. 2 hours
Setup
The first quarter or so of a film’s plot
In media res
In the middle of things
