Name the 6 Production elements
Camera techniques and quality of film Acting Mise en scen Editing Lighting Sound
What is the opening, development and resolution of the narrative
Involves 5 stages of narrative structure:
Normal life > Rising action > Climax > Falling action > Resolution
What is cause and effect
Events, subsequent reactions or consequences of these events. Something occurs = response required to change
What is Establishment and development of, and relationships of characters
How characters are developed in the film through the use of other story elements like mise en scen (costume), camera techniques (eg. Low angle shot=dominance) and acting.
As well as how the relationships of characters are developed in the film, through the connections and conflicts that occur.
What elements influence the establishment and development between characters
shot selection and composition, mise en scene, acting, colour and lighting, editing and sound all play their part.
What is points of view from which the narrative is presented
The predominant perspective the entire narrative is presented from, most are told from one person, however some involve 2 to 3. The character we sympathise the most as well as who does the film stay with the most.
What is the function of setting in the narrative
Setting is the geographical (place), space (events going on the time), and temporal (time). Chosen by the film maker to contribute to the understanding of the plot, to convey meaning about themes and to create atmosphere
What is the relationship between multiple storylines in the narrative
The involvement of the main storyline alongside sub-plots that follow characters and will eventually have an impact on the overall plot. The sub-plots also create tension and help develop characters.
What is Structuring of time
How long the narrative take place (1 day, 1year),
How the internal time is managed, what events are focused on and how long do we spend exploring each event.
What other editing techniques are used to manipulate time Eg. Slo mo or transitions
What is camera techniques and quality of film?
The shot types, angles and movements, as well as film qualities such as the types of lenses used, types of camera, film stock, depth of field, digital versus film, etc.
What is acting
The facial expressions, bodily gestures, use of voice
and use of behaviour to create character.
What is mise en scen
Anything deliberately included in the frame of the shot and the meaning derived from it. Includes: set, lighting, make-up, costume, props and colour.
What are the three purposes of editing
NARRATIVE FUNCTION
EMOTIONAL
INTELLECTUAL
What is the editing purpose Narrative function
= the sequence of shots in order to make sense of the film
What is the editing purpose emotional editing
= the use of editing to establish what emotions are used eg. slow cuts = calm, and fast edits= tension raised
What is the editing purpose Intellectual editing
= planting an image in the audiences mind on whats happening without showing what takes place e.g. the neck break of the dog (babadook)
Lighting (two types)
Low key = single light source, create contrast between light and dark, creating shadows.
High key = multiple lights, prevents shadows and reduce contrast between dark and light
What is sound + two types
dialogue, music, sound effects and incidental sound
Diegetic sound= exists inside the world of the film. This will include dialogue, the sound of foot steps, dogs barking, doors shutting, car noises and foley.
Non diegetic sound= exists purely for the audience and has no impact on the film, e.g.score, soundtrack, some specific sound effects, and sometimes narration.
What genre is Collateral and why (11)
Neo Noir + Action/Thriller • City setting • Hard boiled detective • Crime • Darkside of humanity • Expressionistic lighting o Gun play o Chase sequences o Damsel in distress o Emotional editing (fast) o High body count o characters
What genre is The Babadook and why (6)
Horror ➢ low key lighting ➢ eerie non-diegetic music and sfx ➢ jump scares ➢ foreshadowing of doom ➢ supernatural elements ➢ dark/death themes
Explain what happens in each part in the WHW structure
WHAT
outlines the element that its being used
HOW
What are the technical details of the elements being used in the specific example from the film
WHY
what is the intended effect on the audience? what purpose lies behind the film makers choice
